It’s young carers awareness day on Thursday 31 January and this year the focus is mental health.
“I have suffered with my mental health for most of my life due to an accident as a child but this was exacerbated when my mum’s condition deteriorated when I was 12 and I became a young carer, this is mainly because I was worried about my mum but also reluctant to tell anyone about it because I was afraid that there would be some sort of social services intervention, which of course, I found out, didn’t happen. My mental health has taken a dip in the last few years for a number of reasons, my caring role not being the most significant reason, but I am currently being treated so this should improve.” – Amy, 18 (young carer)
Unfortunately the Manchester Young Carers Group had to disband at the end of 2018 but before they did, they published their transition report which can be downloaded here: YCG_Transition_Report
The Manchester Young Carers Group have also produced a music video about the realities of being a young carer. Watch here.
